Did you know – 20 million slices of bread are thrown away at home in the UK every single day!
That’s about 1.2 million loaves. We haven’t told our bakers that yet as there will sure to be tears!
Joking aside, it’s not the impact on them that matters, it’s the impact processing that food waste has on the environment. In fact, 70% of food waste in the UK comes from our homes. So to help us find ways to reduce the amount of food we waste at home, this great organisation we’re part of, LOVE FOOD HATE WASTE (LFHW for short!), is asking us all to get involved in Food Waste Action Week from the 1st of March. So of course, we said yes!
During the week, LFHW will be helping us become more aware of the easy actions we can all take every day to try and make a difference. We are getting ready to take part in the daily challenges they are setting on their social media channels – and to learning more from the useful tips, hints and information they’re providing to help us take small steps to really making a difference.
It’s incredible to think that if we stopped wasting our precious bread at home, it would have the same impact on greenhouse gas emissions as planting 5.3million trees (and while we love trees, we love bread much more!)
So to help you use your loaf, we will also be providing some handy tips on our twitter channel from Monday – @warburtons. We’ll be sharing information on how to understand date labels, tips to use up leftovers with delicious recipe inspiration, how to optimise your storage, a guide to freezing and defrosting, and more!
