In October 2015, we announced a three year partnership with parkrun, a not-for-profit organisation which holds running events across the UK. junior parkrun is a series of 2k events for children aged between four and 14, held in open spaces across the UK, with the aim of getting families together in the outdoors. The free, timed events are held every week on Sundays and children can run, jog or walk the routes.
Both parkrun and Warburtons are committed to supporting people to build healthy lifestyles and promote physical activity that is fun for all of the family. In a bid to help more young people get active, we pledged to donate £300,000 over three years to help expand the reach of their junior parkrun programme, focusing on targeting those in greatest need. Together with parkrun, we set out to create more opportunities for communities to access junior parkrun in disadvantaged areas.
Family is at the heart of all we do, and we’re supporting this initiative as part of our community investment programme, Families Matter. Our partnership is helping to drive child participation in physical activity; by making it regular, fun and habitual from a young age.
There is also a strong volunteering element to junior parkrun. Events are coordinated entirely by volunteers from the local community, which creates and promotes opportunities for young people to take their first step or continue their development in leadership, and embeds young people’s involvement in the community.
For the end of year one of our partnership, we have put together an end of year report to celebrate the project’s success. The report can be viewed by clicking here.
